Infinity Pool — What It Is and How It Works

An infinity pool (also called an infinity edge pool, vanishing edge pool, or negative edge pool) is a swimming pool designed so that one or more edges appear to merge with the surrounding landscape or skyline. Water flows over the edge into a catch basin below, creating the visual illusion that the pool extends infinitely into the horizon.

How It Works

The engineering behind an infinity pool involves a weir wall — a slightly lower wall on one side of the pool. Water continuously flows over this edge, falls into a hidden catch basin (also called a trough or surge tank), and is pumped back into the main pool. The water level in the main pool is maintained to be exactly flush with the edge, creating the seamless visual effect.

This requires more sophisticated engineering than a standard pool: a larger pump system (to recirculate the overflowing water), a catch basin with adequate capacity, precise leveling, and ongoing maintenance of the recirculation system.
